Summer has just started on the island of Taiwan. The land is lush with vegetation. On this day there’s a hint of a storm approaching as a young Amis girl and her mother head out to gather greens from their garden. There’s ginger root for stew and scallions for savory pancakes. There’s also a weed with jagged edges and hairy stems. It’s ugly, and the girl doesn’t think it belongs in their garden. But it’s not a weed. It’s dadugum, a flowering plant used in many delicious dishes as well as a local medicine. And when the girl asks her mother how something so ugly can be so good, her mother encourages her to look deeper, not just at the plant, but at all the goodness and beauty around them.
